Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
