He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of deaths due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis projected his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

As disorienting as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of hate who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened more slowly, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

The obvious and straightforward fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a form of radical love concentrated on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Finest Within Us
So I have been inspired to witness the persistent defiance against Trump arise in this past year.
