British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
